This expressive portrait was done on gray toned paper. As you can see, the background is heavy contrast black charcoal and the face pale white charcoal with some of the gray tones left bare. It is a stark contrast.
The left side of the face with the eye closed, isn’t peaceful… more worried, or pensive… not at rest. And the right side is shadowed and almost mask-like in features with its shadows and lack of texture. I left it that way intentionally. Something about that dark background and the paleness of her face.. it just looked like she was being swallowed up. Like maybe her very sense of self or identity was being consumed and being flattened by the darkness around her.
