This is a vibrant expressive portrait in acrylic. The yellow around her head and sides was inspired by a persistent migraine aura I get. It is called Persistent because it is a visual aura that occurs whether I’m having a migraine attack or not. And it looks a lot like this. Around people there is a thick edge of light and above the head a flame of light that moves around and adjusts with their movements. It has always fascinated me, this visual hallucination. In the sense that migraine auras are usually a lot different- one sided, sort of wave and pulsations of activity that progress and culminate and then end. And this particular one started as a kid and never went away, prior to my first diagnosed migraine attack. So I have always speculated if it is a migraine aura or some other ocular phenomena. I also have Visual Snow, which among other things causes a sort of static in the vision- and it is possible this is yet another effect from that.
But the writer in me and the mystical thinker speculate on the existence of ‘auras’ that we have around us- maybe an aspect of our quantum reality. Who knows. But I do know some people have this bright yellow-gold ‘aura’ and most do not. So this painting is meant to represent that energy outside of us and within us in a giant feedback loop. No matter what we think of ourselves and how the world breaks us- that fire in us burns bright. That we are worthy despite what we may think or what others’ beliefs may force upon us. But energy from the outside always mingles. We can’t escape the environment we are embedded in. So be careful who you share your fire with- because some people want to just burn the world down.
